ExpressVPN

7.4/10·2,847 reviews

ExpressVPN is technically one of the stronger providers in the category for speed and infrastructure: the proprietary Lightway protocol and TrustedServer technology — RAM-only servers audited by KPMG and PwC — put it ahead of most competitors on reliability. Obfuscation is on by default across all servers, and the service has a consistent track record of working in China. The main flag for reputation-sensitive users is ownership: since September 2021 ExpressVPN has been part of Kape Technologies, which grew out of Crossrider — a browser-extension platform that between 2011 and 2016 became heavily associated with adware distribution before shutting down and rebranding. Kape also owns CyberGhost and Private Internet Access, making three nominally separate brands one holding. The other notable downside is price: at $12.99–$13.99/month on a monthly plan, it is one of the most expensive options in the category.

  • Ease of use7.5/10
  • Price / quality4.5/10
  • Features6.8/10

Ideally suited for

  • Users whose top priority is speed and connection stability — Lightway ranks among the best protocols on both counts
  • Anyone who needs a VPN that actually works in China, the UAE, and other restricted regions — obfuscation is on by default on every server
  • Users who trust technical transparency: TrustedServer and Lightway have each been independently audited by KPMG and PwC
  • Those willing to pay a premium and not wanting to dig through settings — the app is designed for simplicity

Usage scenarios

Speed for business use

Lightway establishes connections fast and reconnects almost instantly when switching networks — critical for accessing corporate resources while traveling. Kill Switch protects data if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly.

Streaming with minimal buffering

One of the more consistent tools for unblocking Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer. Lightway speed effectively eliminates buffering at HD and 4K quality.

Technically transparent privacy

TrustedServer ensures no data persists on servers after a reboot — audited by KPMG and PwC. British Virgin Islands jurisdiction falls outside 5/9/14 Eyes. Kape Technologies ownership since 2021 is a factor for users sensitive to the holding's background.

P2P without speed limits

ExpressVPN doesn't restrict P2P traffic on most servers. Speed and connection stability are the main advantages for torrenting; Kill Switch keeps your real IP hidden if the VPN drops.

Advantages

  • TrustedServer: all servers run on RAM; audited by KPMG and PwC, data is wiped on every server reboot
  • Lightway: open-source proprietary protocol delivering fast speeds and near-instant reconnections
  • Obfuscation on by default across all servers; one of the more reliable implementations for China in the category
  • Wide platform coverage: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, routers, Smart TV, browser extensions

Disadvantages

  • Owned by Kape Technologies since September 2021 — the company grew out of Crossrider, an adware-associated platform (2011–2016); the same holding owns CyberGhost and PIA
  • $12.99–$13.99/month on the monthly plan is among the highest in the category; even the 2-year plan (~$6.67/month) is pricier than comparable competitors
  • No built-in ad blocker on the level of NordVPN Threat Protection or PIA MACE; Threat Manager operates only in certain modes
  • Tiered pricing introduced in 2025 adds confusion: device limits depend on the plan chosen, and the entry tier still imposes restrictions

When Changing Your IP Isn’t Enough

Even if you change your IP address, websites can still recognize your browser and device through dozens of other signals. If you need to appear as a different user, an antidetect browser is the better solution.
