Find IP address from email

You’ve got an email and want to know who exactly has sent it to you. The surest way to do that is to track email IP. When you receive an email, you get much more than a message. An email contains valuable information which is hidden under the hood. This info can tell where the message was sent from and even who sent it. To know that, you have to find the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the sender. Unless the sender uses some kind of proxy or VPN, you’ll be able to trace email IP and then use it to obtain geolocation and other interesting data about the sender.

Here is how to track IP address from email if you use Gmail. First, open the message and click on the down arrow next to the «Reply» button. Here you will see the «Show Original» option – click on it, and a new window will open containing so called headers. These headers will look like this:

Return-path: <[email protected]>

Received: from mac.com ([10.13.11.252])

by ms031.mac.com (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-8.04 (built Feb 28 2007)) with ESMTP id <[email protected]> for [email protected]; Thu, 09 Aug 2007 04:24:50 -0700 (PDT)

How to find email IP address here? Note the line: «Received: from mac.com ([10.13.11.252]).» The IP address of the sender is 10.13.11.252.

The same email IP tracer method works in virtually any other popular email service. For example, if you use Yahoo Mail, open the message, click on «More», and select «View Full Header» from the drop-down menu. You will see the same heading and be able to find IP address of email quickly.

What should you do after using the email address locator? Knowing the IP address, you can obtain such information as the sender’s country, region, Internet service provider, time zone, and even the city. To do this, open whoer.net in your browser and type in the IP address. You will instantly see all the info on the page.
